A bucket elevator is a conveyor for carrying bulk materials in a vertical or inclined path. Bucket elevators for the mechanical, vertical transportation of materials have become a crucial link in the production process in many industrial sectors. Typical elevator consists of: 1. An endless belt, 2. A chain or chains, to which buckets are attached, 3. Necessary loading and discharging terminal machinery, 4. A drive arrangement, 5. Supporting frame or casing. Material is fed into an inlet hopper. Buckets (or cups) dig into the material, and convey it up to and over the head sprocket/pulley, then throwing the material out the discharge throat. The emptied buckets then continue back down to the boot to continue the cycle. BAE helps GB Taekwondo team evaluate electronic scoring vest

BAE Systems has helped the GB Taekwondo team evaluate the electronic scoring vest used in major international competitions. The relatively new system introduced into Taekwondo requires fighters to wear electronic socks that deliver a coded signal when they strike sensors on the opponent’s vest. According to the defence company, the sport has never fully understood how this functions and how to fully optimise appropriate tactics. As part of a £1.5m technology partnership with UK Sport, engineers and scientists from BAE Systems’ Advanced Technology Centre in Bristol spent more than six months testing the electronic scoring vest using equipment usually used to test composite materials’ resistance to impact. This has allowed the GB Taekwondo team to adjust its training style to maximise methods needed to score on the vest, giving the team a marginal gain in competition. E2v provides imaging sensors for SACLA XFEL project E2v is to provide imaging sensors to form part of the next generation of focal plane imaging sensors in the Spring-8 Angstrom Compact free-electron Laser (SACLA), an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) located in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. The XFEL is a joint project between Japanese natural sciences research institute RIKEN and the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute. SACLA became available for use by worldwide researchers in March 2012.

Renewable energy could fully power a large electric grid 99.9 per cent of the time by 2030 at costs comparable to today’s electricity expenses, according to new research by the University of Delaware (UD) and Delaware Technical Community College. A well-designed combination of wind power, solar power and storage in batteries and fuel cells would nearly always exceed electricity demands while keeping costs low, the scientists found. ‘These results break the conventional wisdom that renewable energy is too unreliable and expensive,’ said co-author Willett Kempton, professor in the School of Marine Science and Policy in UD’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. ‘The key is to get the right combination of electricity sources and storage — which we did by an exhaustive search — and to calculate costs correctly.’ According to a statement, the authors developed a computer model to consider 28 billion combinations of renewable energy sources and storage mechanisms, each tested...

A US solar energy start-up has developed a technique for manufacturing its ‘spray-on’ photovoltaic windows. New Energy Technologies believes the technique should lead to higher production speed, lower overall costs and greater durability of the end product. ‘These achievements have moved us closer to our manufacturing, scale-up, and power production goals — all-important factors to advancing our Solar Window technology towards commercial launch,’ said John Conklin, chief executive officer at New Energy. WISH participants will participate in online forums focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) topics, and complete online activities to qualify for a six-day summer experience at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
